Protagonist to leader of a relegio- political party:
”….The idea of a westernised solitary individual whose faith in God is private is very threatening to you. An atheist who belongs to a community is far easier for you to trust than a solitary man who believes in God. For you a solitary man is far more wretched and sinful than a non-believer….”

The relegious fanatic to the protagonist who is a liberal atheist:
”….You are a western agent. You are the slave of the ruthless Europeans, and like true slaves, you dont even know you are a slave. Not only were you brought up to look down on your traditions, you think you live on a higher plane than ordinary people. According to your kind, the road to a good, moral life is not through God or relegion, or through taking part in the life of the common people. No, its just a matter of imitating the West. Perhaps from time to time you say a word or two reproaching the tyrannies visited on the Islamists and the Kurds, but in your heart of hearts you dont mind at all when the military takes charge.
You cant make me drink wine. I refuse to be a European and I wont ape their ways. I am going to live out my own history and be no one but myself. I, for one, believe it’s possible to be happy without becoming a mock-European, without becoming their slave. There is a word Europhiles very commonly use when they denigrate our people: to be a true westerner, a person must first become an individual, and then they go on to say that, in Turkey, there are no individuals! Well, thats how I see my execution. I am standing up against the Westerners as an individual. It’s because I’m an individual that I refuse to imitate them….”

”….People might feel sorry for a man who’s fallen on hard times, but when an entire nation is poor, the rest of the world assumes at once that all the people of that nation must be brainless, lazy, dirty, clumsy fools. Instead of pity, the people provoke laughter. It’s all a joke- their culture, their customs, their practices. As time goes by, some of the rest of the world begins to feel ashamed for having thought this way, and when they look around and see immigrants from that poor country mopping their floors and doing all the other lowest paying jobs, naturally they worry about what might happen if these workers one day rose up against them. So, to keep things sweet, they start taking an interest in the immigrant’s culture, and sometimes even pretend to think of them as equals. When a westerner meets some one from a poor country, the first thing he feels is deep contempt. He thinks it must be because the fellow comes from a country of fools that he’s as poor as he is. And the next thing this westerner thinks is that the poor man’s head must be full of all the nonsense that plunged his country into poverty and despair.”

”….Will the west, which takes its great invention, democracy, more seriously than the word of God, come out against this coup that has brought an end to the democracy in Kars? Or are we to conclude that democracy, freedom and human rights dont matter, that all the west wants is for the rest of the world to imitate it like monkeys? Can the west endure any democracy achieved by enemies who in no way resemble them?….”

The leader of the military coup that crushes the extremist relegious movement talking to the disillusioned detatched protagonist:
”….Are you afraid of the shame you will feel when the Europeans see what we have done here? Do you know how many people they hanged to establish the modern world you admire so much? Attaturk had no time for bird brained fantasists- he had people like you swinging from the rope the very first day. Get this into your head, too- those religious high school boys you saw in the cells today have your face permanently etched in their memories. They’ll throw bombs at anyone and anything- they dont care as long as they are heard. No one who is even slightly westernised can breath freely in this country unless they have a secular army protecting them, and no one needs this protection more than the intellectuals who think they are better than everyone else and look down on people- if it weren’t for the army, the fanatics would be turning their rusty knives on the lot of them and their painted women, chopping them all into little pieces. But what do these upstarts do in return? They cling to their little European ways and turn up their affected little noses at the very soldiers who guarantee their freedom. When we go the way of Iran, do you think any one is going to remember how a porridge hearted liberal like you shed a few tears for the boys from the relegious high school? When the day comes they’ll kill you for just being a little westernalised; for being frightened and forgetting the Arabic words of a simple prayer; even for wearing a tie; or that coat of yours….”
