Dev D

What can another story on Devdas do? I know the twists. I know the turns. I know the angst. But I was wrong. This movie has originality dripping through its pores.
I am not sure whether Dev D represents the new generation or not. Because if characterisation of the new Dev D is to be complete, he would not need a trigger of a ‘love lost’ to move down the ladder. And the new generation is lot more calculating and ambitious than Dev. But I like the defiance.
So what’s the most important innovation of Anurag Kashyap, scriptwise? The raw Delhi? The new Paro? Chanda? The reference to the recent news events? No.
Its the character of Dev. Its here AK hits the creative jackpot. Once the defiant, irritating, selfserving protagonist is established, the script literally writes itself. Everything falls in place itself.
When an upbeat ending was created, there is an inconsistency in the character of Dev. But it’s OK. I believe it did good to the box office collections. And now AK wont have to struggle again to make another Gulaal.

  1. A rigid character will surely have emotions but I don’t think he will attract people towards him……..the old devdas had enough reason to feel sad for him but for Abhey in dev d I don’t find any sympthy whatsoever for him…….it looks like a spoiled child is doing what he wants……………he doesn’t have any commonsense……..just want to fulfill his desires at any cost and anywhere……….yeah all these were in old devdas too but it was done artistically & dialogue delivery was supereb………..but the modern Devdas is seems to me emotionless………………some people can say old devdas was bit loud…….and modern devdas is bit sophisticated………but overall it doesn’t work atleast for me…………………..

    its my view

    1. Amit,
Good to see you here. Regarding the new Devdas, I think the lack of sympathy he evokes was intentional from AK’s part. Why do you think that Devdas should evoke sympathy? We have antiheroes who don’t evoke sympathy- ex-Johny Gaddaar, Hannibal Lecter etc. But I understand that its difficult to identify with Abhay. But that doesnt make DevD a bad film.

      1. yeah johny gaddar doesn’t evoke sympathy but it gives u loads of thrilling moments ………..Johny gaddar I consider is one of the most underrated movies in bollywood……but for me it is 10 out of 10…….

anurag has his own style……..sometimes it looks like someone is playing jazz music (no smoking) in front of classical lover audience……….even in black friday (I liked it) he shown only wat happened in mumbai bomb blast……..like u witnessed some incident and you are telling other people in scripted manner………there were no creation at all.

anyway argument doesn’t leads us anywhere……..sometimes they only satisfied us………sometimes don’t

  2. the biggest reason for the film’s pace is ,as khalid mohammad commented on passion for cinema.in…dat da movie stuck to it’s point throughout…it’s da screenplay responsible….
